This project began in December 2010 with one student and a goal: to allow students to practice their learned vocational skills while turning discarded waste fabric scraps into a sellable product and returning the profits back to the students.

Now for one hour a day, 10 hearing and speech impaired students perfect their skills in tailoring, embroidery, teamwork and leadership while making small bags out of waste fabric. And they enthusiastically take pride in their creations.

Early on BCT found that the twin evils that continue to plague the rural poor are ignorance and ill-health. The first was addressed by organizing programmes that emphasized education and training. To tackle the latter, BCT established the Grama Arogyalayam Trust in 1985 to deal with health education as well as treatment of illness. One of the earliest steps taken by BCT’s staff was the training of illiterate women to be health workers. These women were given basic training in health and hygiene using an innovative training method consisting of flashcards and practical demonstration.

Simultaneously, traditional midwives in each village were also given training in modern midwifery to enable them to conduct normal deliveries in a hygienic and safe manner.

With the health initiatives by the State Government increased with the emergency services as well as appointing nurses and incentivizing institutional deliveries, BCT has begun to focus again on the preventive care especially school children. The current program is the 12 x 12 initiative. This initiative is directed at ensuring that every adolescent child by the age of 12 years has a Hb% level of 12gm was started on 23 February 2010 at Residential Model High School.

The children both girls and boys belonging to classes VIth to X ages between 10 to 16 years were subjected to a Hb% test, height and weight were measured and other particulars regarding nutrition, alertness, performance in class, sports activity and other extra curricular activities were recorded.

Weekly iron tablets (Livogen) containing 50 gms of essential iron were given every Tuesday(IRONDAY) under supervision. Deworming was done every 6months with Albendagole 400mg.

Health awareness in the form of weekly classes on personal hygiene, hand washing, first aid, nutrition were taken and stressed.

The Hb%, Wt, Ht, performance were recorded after 6 months of initiation of treatment and the findings recorded. An analysis of the findings is given below.

A total 120 school children between the age 10 to 16 years and belonging to classes VIth to Xth were enclosed the programme.

Out of the 121 children, 99 children completed 6 months of weekly iron use and 22 children belonging to the Xth Std who, appeared for the public exam in April left the school in May after completing 3 months of the programme.

These 22 children’s did very well in their Xth exams and came out in flying colour, 3 of then having secured the first these ranks in the mandal.

Weight gained by the children between VIth to IXth Std. was a minimum of 2kg and height increase was an average of 2cm.

The children took part in a 24 hours folk dance program in the month of July. They could complete the performance without any tiresomeness or testragy which reflects the strength of stamina of the children’s.

Deworming has been done twice initially at the start of the project and after 6 months.

The number of sick children attending the weekly OPD’s on Sunday or Tuesday has dwindled as the general health immunity of the children’ has improved.

Folk arts are as old as humanity. They cover the entire gamut of human activity from womb to tomb. Common people (folks) described their everyday chores through little songs (arts), giving birth to the term, folk arts. The artists performing were promoted by villagers, who would often get them to perform at every conceivable opportunity. A symbiotic relation thus existed between the two, leading to development of the art form. It slowly evolved with time, matching societal norms and beliefs. Also it became a strong means of how the Indian culture got orally recorded and passed on to the next generations.

However with the passage of time, advent of “modern” education & dynamic entertainment (cinema & television), this art form was soon overshadowed. As a result, many folk art forms perished. Only a fraction of these are still alive, but still struggling. The artists often live in abject poverty and many have given up on the art as a means to living.

With these arts being an important link in our cultural history, it is thus important to revive as much as we can. People like Sri Nendunuri Gangadharam et al have strived immensely towards the preservation and promotion of folk art. We too intend to utilize our means towards that end.

Current Programme:

Dr.B.V.Parameswara Rao, Founder, BCT, felt that the revival of folk arts could help manifold. It would help preserve our culture, arrest the rapid downfall of values and anchor people to their history. He along with Dr.Pappu Venugopal (Secretary, Madras Music & Dance Academy, Chennai), Dr.Murali Babu (Dance Director, Vigyan School, Vizag), Dr.Anita Shanmughanathan (Director, Aeka Academy) met at BCT in February, 2010. Many aspects became clear in the discussions and it was noted,

That rejuvenation of folk arts is achievable

It can only happen if children are involved,

A School of Folk Arts must be established

As a first step, all 105 children in the BCT Model School High School were soon trained in six folk art forms, under the able guidance of Dr. Murali Babu. These forms included Kolatam, Burrakatha, Jamukulu, Chitikelu, Tappetagullu and Dappu dance. The training was conducted between 23rd April to 30th April at the BCT Farm Complex, Haripuram. Immediately after the training programme, the children performed in various villages.

A positive response in the villages, motivated us to take our journey a step further. The 24 hour non-stop program at Visakhapatnam was so performed as a means to bring rural art forms to city dwellers. We felt this would be just apt to increase awareness on the culture and traditions of the region. As the process takes on, the art forms and the morale of its performers will surely be rejuvenated, and these dying art forms will hopefully be promoted, protected and in the long run, preserved.

He does not consider himself educated, though he did learn to read and write a bit at a night school in the early days of BCT. He is an experienced farmer with many agricultural skills, yet he felt quite helpless and didn’t know what to do when a major drought hit the area, ruined his rice crop and threatened to destroy his livelihood. At this time BCT-KVK was making visits to farmers, assessing situations and making suggestions. Demudu had never heard of the organization before, but happily took their advice to grow finger millet and planted the seeds they gave him. That year, his was the only green crop in the entire area. He harvested 500 kilograms of the millet, which was of excellent quality. The whole village came to see his crop and many purchased seeds for themselves, and they to had good yields.

Demudu was grateful to the organization for showing him a way to overcome the drought period. He wanted to thank them and show them the excellent results, but realized he had forgotten the name of the organization. He spent days searching and asking around and finally found his way back to KVK to give his thanks. Since that time he has continued to follow KVK’s advice and is always eager to try new seeds and new methods. He has even been selected as the best farmer in the area and was presented with an award by KVK. He attributes his success in farming to his attitude, and his willingness to adapt and try new things. His son has visited the KVK farm and research center, and now attends KVK meetings regularly.

This year Demudu feels fortunate to once again have a good rice crop. He will earn 460 rupees for every 100 kilograms of rice. With this income he wants to clear the debts he has with banks and private moneylenders. He is concerned about the bad situation still faced by many of the farmers as they deal with the devastation caused the drought and hopes for another good harvest next year in order to fully recover.

She was first introduced to the organization when an older woman from her village, who sold goods in neighboring villages, met a BCT volunteer and asked her to come to Lanka Dharmavaram. Up until that point spent any money that they earned without saving, and acquired loans from outside sources that they would have to pay back in kind, that is, with the crops they grew. In this way, they would usually end up paying back more than they had originally borrowed. With the help of the BCT volunteer, Ademma and other women of the village formed a thrift group and began saving. BCT allowed them to take out individual loans in the amount of 2 times their collective savings.

Ademma used a loan to further develop and expand her farm and was able to pay back the loan while at the same time continuing to put money towards savings. Ademma and other villagers then began to participate in BCT’s nursery program. BCT supplied seeds and fertilizer for the villagers to raise. They could then keep what they wanted for their own use and BCT would buy back the rest. Before BCT Ademma knew very little about plants and trees and had no idea she could be cultivating many different kinds. BCT/KVK has given and continues to give her new varieties of seeds and she now grows cashew, mango, and drumstick trees among others.

What Ademma wasn’t aware of at the time the nursery program began was that BCT was also setting aside a small percentage of the women’s earnings to be used collectively on a project of the group’s choice. The women decided to invest in a set of cooking utensils that could be rented by others for special functions. From the fees they collected they were able to expand on the variety of items and were able to make a good profit.

In the early 1990’s the Central Minister for Woman and Child Development visited BCT and it’s adopted villages in order to observe the nursery activities. On this occasion there was a meeting held at Haripuram, which was attended by top government officials and local self-help groups from 48 villages. Ademma, though illiterate and inexperienced in such affairs, organized and presided over this important meeting with grace, intelligence and efficiency. She presented the problems facing her community with such conviction that she was immediately offered a check for 50,000 rupees to establish the first agricultural college in the area.

Ademma’s accomplishments also include requesting and securing a community borehole, serving as president of the village BCT school committee as well as governing body member of BCT. Like so many of the villagers we talked to who have been involved with BCT, she also emphasizes the self-confidence she has gained through her experiences and successes. She proudly relates the story of the day the collector (mayor) was in the area. Ademma went to meet him in order to relate some of the problems her village is facing. He was so impressed with her bold, forthright manner that he asked to have his picture taken with her. He gave her a copy and kept one for himself.

Ademma lost 3 sons while they were still in their childhood. Her fourth son died shortly following the birth of his daughter, who is mentally retarded. She raised and supported her 3 granddaughters and is now also looking after the next generation. Her great-grandchildren are all in BCT schools and she hopes that they will continue and improve on the work and ideas that she and other villages have begun.

This experience made him determined to ensure that his own children would not face the same fate. Luckily, by the time Chinababu was of school age, BCT had introduced their night school program so he was able to help his father in the fields during the day and attend school in the evening. Following primary school, Chinababu was among the first batch of students to be enrolled in BCT’s Model High School . He just recently completed a degree in science and is now awaiting his entrance exam results to enter a Bachelors of Education program, with the goal of becoming a math teacher.

In the mean time he is teaching primary school (grades 1-5) at the BCT School near the Training Center for the Disabled. As we speak with him his students work quietly with various BCT-created learning materials such as Telugu alphabet cards. This is exactly what Chinababu likes about the BCT educational model: it involves active student participation and fun activities instead of purely lectures and rote memorization.

He also appreciates the personal attention he received at BCT schools and which he is now able to give his own students because of the small size of classes. In addition, he is grateful for the tailoring skills he learned while attending the Model High School.

He still uses his skills to help his neighbor who is a tailor and earn extra income. Finally, Chinababu says that BCT helped him lose his stage fright and taught him songs and skits that he can now pass on to his students or use to entertain family and friends!

Name: Chadoram Sankar
Age: 20
Village: Ganaparthi

A national program to vaccinate every child in India against Polio was started about 9 years ago and has been very successful in dramatically reducing the number of cases of this disease. Unfortunately the program came to late for Chadoram, who contracted Polio and was left crippled by it. He now uses a big long stick for support as he walks, and with it he actually seems to be able to get around faster than anyone else. He never let his disability keep him from getting an education, and completed all the way to the intermediate level in government schools.

Immediately following the intermediate level he joined the Training Center for Disabled Children, which he had learned about through the local BCT school. At the center he was trained in tailoring, paper bag and plate making, as well as agriculture. Because he had already completed an academic education, he was also able to help the other students with their academic work. Chadoram truly enjoyed his time at the Center because of it’s peaceful and happy atmosphere. He also says that the teaching of skills there is very thorough and complete, and he was able to gain great confidence both in his tailoring and in his speaking and social interaction skills.

Upon completion of the program BCT sold him a sewing machine with a loan to be paid back over 20 months. The first month of business was slow, but Chadoram didn’t get discouraged. Soon the orders started flowing in, and he now makes an average of 70 rupees per day.

During the recent festival period in January, he made 3,500 rupees in 20 days. The community has been very supportive and encourages him by sending orders his way. He returns to the BCT Center regularly in order to refresh his skills and stitch items as a way of paying back his loan. He has also begun saving and just recently at a Games Day function at the Center, willing gave a loan of Rs. 3000 out of his own 2-year savings of Rs. 7000 to a group of students and community members who want to start income generating programs for self-support.

The agricultural skills that Chadoram himself learned at the center have also come in handy, as he now helps his father in the sugar cane fields.

Chadoram is now receiving so many orders that he plans to train and hire an assistant in order to help him meet demand.

Demudamma’s family was one of the very first to receive a calf through BCT’s program. With the money she earned from the milk she was able to start saving in a women’s thrift group, a concept that was foreign to her before BCT. Through her contact with BCT and the women’s group she has become an innovative business woman, trying out many different ways to make money and never hesitating to travel to neighboring villages to find work.

She was trained to make Papad, the thin round crispy snacks popular in this area, and sold them in town. However, when she broke her wrist and transport became a problem, she had to find another source of income. She now sells vegetables in the village and is also a member in a group of 15 women who take turns cooking the midday meal for the local BCT school. They devised this system themselves and it seems to work well in allowing flexibility for the members.

Through her combined earnings Demudamma is able to support herself and her frail husband, who is unable to work himself. She has passed her savings on to her daughter who now continues to put in money.

Economic:
“Not having enough money or misusing money is economic poverty. In order to overcome this poverty we should save money and also produce things. For instance children like me can grow vegetables, stitch Adda leaves, or make bags. Saving is keeping a portion of the earnings to the side and learning to budget money.”

Bodily:
“In olden days people used simple remedies for several ailments. Now we use costly medicines for minor ailments and also suffer the side effects. We also dump rubbish everywhere, we are not eating healthy food, we are forgetting that health is wealth. Let us keep our environment clean, let us eat healthy and be hygienic. We can overcome bodily poverty!”

Mental:
“Inability to think is mental poverty. This inability results in feelings of inferiority. This happens due to lack education. It is therefore essential to educate the children of our villages. With education not only do we overcome mental poverty but we gain confidence in doing anything. In our villages only a third of our children are going to school. The educated children will be much able to develop our villages.”

Cultural:
“Culture is our arts and crafts. It brings out our creativity and gives us beauty and a sense of joy and achievement. In addition, the age old traditions that we inherited should be preserved. It is sad that children like me have heard about these arts but never saw them. I fear that we may lose our beautiful arts. May I request you all to stop various modern dances and instead pick one of our 64 arts and craft to revive them.”

Spiritual:
“Spiritual poverty is loss of faith in God and in fellow human beings. Without this faith not much progress can be achieved. To address this poverty we need to first come together for bhajas to worship God. May I suggest this to all elders and youngsters, men and ladies.”

Societal:
“Now a days people have started believing in their welfare without regard to society. This is social poverty. In order to address this poverty everyone should change the way they think: welfare of the society is my welfare, but my welfare is not necessarily that of society. Instead of thinking of what the village has given us we should think of how we can contribute to a village. In this way we can address societal poverty. May I suggest to you all to take 1 min an hour, or half an hour a day or half a day a week toward developing your village.”

Normally it is ‘economic poverty that is considered poverty. But it does not suffice if we attack economic poverty alone. All the seven poverties listed below must be addressed for an integrated development of our society. Believing strongly that change and development must come from within, BCT has come to find that the best group to first address these 7 poverties and the ways to overcome them is the high school age group (11-15). These students are trained in the concepts and learn songs and dances that are used to illustrate the various points. They journey out into the villages and perform for the entire community, with the hope that it will inspire others to make positive changes in their lives.

There are seven poverties that are affecting us:

Economic poverty: lack of food, clothing and shelter

Bodily poverty: lack of health and hygiene, malnutrition

Mental poverty: lack of thinking and education

Cultural poverty: lack of cultural activities and practices

Spiritual poverty: lack of mental peace and feeling of brotherhood

Political poverty: not casting one’s vote, lack of development

Societal poverty: lack of unity and neighborliness

Believing strongly that change and development must come from within, BCT has come to find that the best group to first address these 7 poverties and the ways to overcome them is the high school age group (11-15). These students are trained in the concepts and learn songs and dances that are used to illustrate the various points. They journey out into the villages and perform for the entire community, with the hope that it will inspire others to make positive changes in their lives.
